Clive - single scull at Ebchester Regatta (2018)
What a great event, the revived Ebchester regatta in 2018. A 200 metre course (and even that's stretching it). Sadly I didn't arrive in time to see Clive compete (a problem with one of his gates, they said) He had dried out and he showed me his single pot from the last regatta in 1973. I was amused to see he beat a Jock Wishart in the final. Clive was Indefatigable

Another from the Allcomer's Regatta 2019. Clive had a thoroughly enjoyable day criticising the winning crew - who all gave back as good as they got. :) And yes, he did still stand up in the boat to grandstand the instruction

Coaching/Coxing the winners of the Allcomers 2019 (2019)
I asked Clive to coach my Allcomers crew last year, as I couldn't make the event. He not only happily stepped in, but coxed them to victory, all the while refusing to wear the crew t-shirt opting for the traditional Clive outfit instead. The Crazy ladies had a wonderful day with him and how good it was to see his obvious enjoyment of bringing on a crew of beginners. He coached me from LearntoRow 8 years ago and was a very big part of many happy rowing memories. He will be such a big loss, but no one who ever met him could forget him. Row well, Clive xxx

This was the 'skills' event. After rigger dipping, manoeuvring around a buoy and all sorts of other skills tests, the crew made a sprint for the finish. One of the men called - 'I've come off my seat' Clive in his inimitable way called back - 'I DON'T care! I'm chucking now thinking of it. Of course you keep on rowing if you've come off your seat especially when the finish is in sight!

Taking the Train in Training (1975)
Another map. Probably my favourite walk with Clive. Took train to Corrour Station, basically a platform in middle of Rannoch Moor built to get shooters onto the estate in summer. Alight. Jump off platform into thigh deep snow and make for overnight stop in a "Bothy"; a byre where animals can be sheltered downstairs, while you sleep on a platform above. Hope you didn't walk right over it buried under the deep snow. Just five of us and occasional stag. Expansive white wonderand. Again map prepared for Speech Day 75.

Aonach Eagach (Map) (1975)
For those unfamilair with Glencoe the map (red line) shows the route along the Aonach Eagach ridge which Clive led us on. The path is mostly two feet wide, except for the various pinnacles, with a 3,000 foot drop into the glen on south side and mainly half that on north. Note the convenient location of the Clachaig Hotel at the bottom of the Clkachaig gully, route form East to West. Map was used for display at Speech Day to promote outdoor activities.

Clive always gave his time to everyone. He spent hours coaching us even though he frightened the life out of me every time he stood up in the boat particularly if we were by the weir!

Cathedral Range traverse, a brilliant day walking with Clive. Over the course of the day I learned of his solo exploits at 15,000 feet in Ecuador. I remember telling Jan how much I loved his company. Had time to tune in to him. He'd start a story, then long silences, then pick it up again. Wish I had a recording of his tales that day.

Not a photo of Clive, but of someone who was one of his Fellow adventurers, Ed Kaye, taken on our way to the snowhole. We shared a lot of experiences that week!

Clive won the Veteran single scull at Ebchester in 1974 shortly before the Ebchester club was disbanded, and was keen to defend the title when the regatta was resurrected in 2019, but sadly it didn't quite go according to plan.

A trip up the Tees (2015)
A trip up the Tees to Yarm and back had taken years of planning for DARC's recreational rowers, and finally came to fruition in 2015. The plan was for Caroline to cox the eight on the way there while Clive went in the Virus single and changed places with Caroline on arrival at Yarm, with Clive coxing the trip back to Tees. The plan worked perfectly. The aside transpired when Debbie was alerted to the sound of a bleating lamb trapped on the far bank. On arrival Clive hopped out of the single and was duly despatched along with John Lund on a rescue mission in the launch to return the stricken sheep to safety, before taking his place in the eight.
